R4ids gold has broken 3DS successfully !

Little is known and this has yet to be confirmed, but if the R4i gold team is to believed they've managed to make their R4i flashcart work on the 3DS as can be seen in the video above. These team members are not associated with the R4i gold team who donated R4i Gold cards to the Tempmas contest, an important distinction.

3.55 GeoHot Custom Firmware supports Castlevania PS3 Backup now

riku.kh3 ,the person that has shared the first Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (BLES01047) signed and packed EBOOT that works with the recently released GeoHot 3.55 PS3 Custom Firmware followed by 3D Dot Game Heroes.
Here is the quoted from PSGroove: He has sucessfully ran Castlevania: Lords of Shadow from his internal hard drive, while on Geohot's 3.55 Custom Firmware. He achieved this by patching the game's main executable file (EBOOT.BIN) and making the PS3 think it's a PSN game.

1) Install PKG file.
2) Transfer contents of USRDIR folder, PS3 break EXCEPT EBOOT.BIN, to /devhdd0/game/BLES01047/USRDIR/
Thats all! Tested! The game will work from XMB on retail nonJB 3.41, 3.55 and future versions.
Now ,following the steps to patch your games:
1) Download and compile latest tools from git.fail0verflow.com Git (old versions of unself produce incorrect ELF)
2) Extract ELF from SELF
3) Hexedit ELF, find and replace dev_bdvd to correct path on dev_hdd0 (not all, but most games require this step)
4) Build NPDRM SELF using Geohot's tools
5) Build package using psn_package_npdrm
6) Patch your builded package using Geohot's tool (only for 3.55 firmware)
That's it. If you can't follow this guide, a more detailed guide won't help you.
This also works from 3.41, with no jailbreak dongle.Like:PS jailbreak, USB jailbreakor any other PS3 break items.

PSP / PS3 PKG Decrypter and Extractor v.1.0 is Released

Today Mathieulh has released a PSP / PS3 PKG Decrypter and Extractor v.1.0.0.0 for decrypting and extracting PlayStation 3 , PlayStation Portable and mixed game package files via PC.
Here is quoted from the ReadMe/Twitter:
btw if you don't want to mess with the whole packages algo stuff, just use AES CTR with the package key iv at 0x70 in the package. Sorry I forgot to include the readme in the fixed release, this is now fixed as well. btw that hmac key was fail, don't use it, another is actually used.
It's not really signed, just encrypted with AES and HMAC.PS jailbreak woops I forgot to enable the button when I cleaned up the app (yeah I fail, gonna do a small re-release xD) btw I forgot to mention in the readme this is not the 1:1 algorithm, it's been improved, it extracts pkgs roughly 3 times as fast as on ps3.
What does this do ?
This will decrypt and extract Playstation 3, Playstation Portable and mixed GAME PACKAGES (NOT UPDATER ONES !) onto your pc.
How do I use it ?
Just open the package you want to extract or drag and drop it and click on "Extract package"
Can I run this on Linux ?
Sorry this app is windows only, however full sources have been supplied along with it so feel free to make a Linux port out of it, you have my blessing.
Can This encrypt/sign my game packages ?
NO, when this application was written, the main concern was about packages decryption, so that part was kinda skipped, however it is trivial to do the reverse operation, remember, sources are supplied.
Here is the little story, this little app was done since litterally AGES , distributed to a very small amount of people, and was conveniently designed and used to decrypt packages and repack them on our debug consoles so we wouldn't have to QA flag them to update our games or install games we purchased from the ps store.
The algorithm was a bit of a pain to reverse but the keys could be easily grabbed with a lv2 exploit. So here we are, this app was done but the problem is it couldn't be leaked because I and PS3 break a few other people who were entrusted with it, were kinda afraid that sony would change the keys and fix whatever exploits we had (turned out they didn't) but since we can now get whatever
new keys they add/change this has become a quite irrelevant concern. The next concern was piracy.
There was nothing at the time justifying a release for that application, most people would just not have a legit use for it so releasing was out of the question.
So what changed our minds ? Well, ccc happened, and Segher (props to him !) figured how to conveniently calculate private keys and suddenly a legit use appeared, as people would/might need to encrypt their packages to install their own signed apps onto their consoles. This is not a 1:1 algorithm port as it's been improved, thus the decryption happens 3 times as fast as on playstation 3
So , in the new year,a hot PS3 item--PS3 Game HDD will bring you much more fun.

PS3 V3.55 downgrade now

This is a big news to PS3 funs, especially to the guys who have a 3.55 system PS3, nearly a week ago , it is reported that  PS3 downgrade is available from 3.55 to 3.41 Firmware, and now , it became true, some guys have confirmed that PS3 3.55 to 3.41 Firmware Downgrader arrived today courtesy of solidpsycho through a guide from AmazingLarry.

You can download files here : Lv2diag_355 / PS3 3.55 Downgrade (3.41) / PS3 3.55 Downgrade (3.41) (Mirror)

Here is the  quote from them : Here is a patched 3.41 that allows you to downgrade. I patched the info0 to 356, and I also used Warrens method to bypass the br drive during the update. I have tested this on both of my PS3's and haven't run into any problems.

3.55 Downgrade has been confirmed on both FAT and SLIM consoles.

Please note you CANNOT use these files if you bought a PS3 that came stock with FW 3.50. DO NOT DO IT. STOP NOW.

THE SAME WARNINGS AND RULES APPLY:

You may want to download geo's 3.55-jb and install that and blackb0x ftp if you have not, it will be very useful for the next bit.

Blackb0x FTP server 1.2: Blackb0xFTP for 3.55 FW

If you have a fat PS3 with 256MB NAND you will need to back up your dev_flash folders, as you WILL LOSE BLURAY PLAYBACK. (on my FAT model i restored the DRL1 and DRL2 files in del_flash(2?) I did get to however keep all of my signed 3.55-jb homebrew, and it all works in retail mode except of course backup managers)

If you have a Small NAND SLIM or FAT console it would be a good idea to do one or both of the following:

In the XMB perform a system backup to save installed Homebrew you may have and gamesaves etc.. to an external device (i did this with my slim and it worked perfectly, all my installed signed homebrew from 3.55-jb works in retail 3.41 now)

-or-

make a COMPLETE backup of your HDD on your ps3 using ftp, although i dont think installed packages can be moved back over simply by ftp. i only tested the first method.

And now to downgrade:

You will need a downgrader dongle, search the forums for a DIY or buy one, or get an android/iphone, or an ipod nano, etc...

1) Unplug or switch off your console and then switch back on or plug back in.

2) While still OFF connect your Jailbreak/Downgrade device and press POWER then quickly Eject, you PS3 console should turn itself off automatically

3) OPTIONAL - Turn your PS3 on to verify you are in Service Mode (you will see a big red box, you can't miss it) then turn your PS3 back OFF

4) Place the lv2diag.self (FILE 1) from the archive and the PS3UPDAT.PUP (3.41 FW) from the archive on the root of a usb device and plug into the rightmost port on your console (dev_usb0)

5) Power on your PS3 with the usb device in and have a coffee, it can take a few moments for the PUP to install, your PS3 will turn off automatically

NOTE: if your system seems unresponsive and the light just stays green for ten minutes or more you need to use a different usb stick. i've had sporadic results with several different sticks.

6) Power your ps3 back on, you should still be in service mode, check your FW version now to verify you have downgraded successfully. Turn Off

7) Remove previous archive files from usb stick and now place lv2diag.self (FILE 2) on the root of your usb stick

8) Place usb stick in rightmost port of your PS3 (dev_usb0)

9) Turn PS3 back on with usb in place, it should turn itself off very shortly after.

10) Turn your PS3 back on and go through the configuration again.

Sony not using secure connections in PS3

Since the PS3 has gotten more and more open, people have been looking into it's security methods.
Some things that have been found are borderline scary.

One fact uncovered is that credit card data used to make purchases on PSN is not encrypted separately, with Sony instead relying on the standard SSL. The problem being SSL is end-to-end encryption, and with so many users using custom firmware (that other people made) there's no guarantee the firmware a user has isn't copying the information and sending it elsewhere (as it's easy to sign your own SSL certificates). In addition many users with modded PS3 systems set alternate DNS servers in order to bypass some of Sony's firmware checks when allowing PSN access. These DNS servers could also be re-routing personal/finance information to places other than Sony's servers.

The documents provided mention more about what the PS3 communicates back to Sony, which includes info such as your television model, any attached USB devices, and your playtime habits.

This information raises many questions.

How far should companies go to keep customer financial information out of the wrong hands?
Should customers be told that a company is collecting information from outside the system?
What personal information do they have the right to collect?

Best games coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 this semester

School is extremely important, but you also need some down time from hitting the books. My suggestion is to play some awesome video games and there are some absolutely fabulous games coming out in the first half of the year. The first part of this two-part installment will show you guys exactly the games you're going to want to be playing this semester for the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
Bulletstorm:  This game is a first person shooter for both 360 and PS3 made by EA Games. But it's not your everyday shooter. The point of this game is to kill in the most sadistic and stylish way possible. This game is going to be absolutely nuts. There are a few different things that you don't often see in first person shooters today. First is what they call "the leash," which pulls enemies out of hiding and right in front of your gun for hours of great killing fun. There is also a melee kick. That's for when you just want to add insult to a gunshot wound. "Bulletstorm" releases Feb. 22.
Killzone 3: This is another first person shooter, but it's a PS3 exclusive made by Sony. Sorry, 360 fans. It's Move compatible and for those who don't know what the Move is think Nintendo Wii with better graphics. Now, I wasn't a huge fan of "Killzone 2" for many reasons. For instance, you throw a grenade and the enemy apparently has superior armor because, even if you hit him straight in the face with it, only his helmet flies off and he still has enough sense to shoot you.  But I'm hoping for things like that to be fixed. Fans of the "Killzone" series should definitely pick it up and anyone who wants to try the first real shooter for the Move should try it too. This game also releases on Feb. 22.
Mortal Kombat: Does anyone remember the old school "Mortal Kombat," button mashing with your friends as Sub Zero and Johnny Cage? Well, Warner Home Video Games is giving this franchise a reboot on the 360 and PS3. "Mortal Kombat" has always been one of my favorite games, but when Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe came out, I was sorely disappointed. Fatalities weren't fatalities. Yeah, it was cool beating Superman's butt as the Joker, but the "teen" rating really brought it down. With this reboot of the classic fighting game and with the rating going back up to "M" for mature, I have high hopes for this game and already have my copy pre-ordered. "Mortal Kombat" releases April 9.
L.A. Noir: This is the game I've been waiting for since its announcement early last year.  It's a Rockstar game (you know, those guys who brought you GTA and Red Dead Redemption) for the PS3 and 360. But it's not going to be completely like the Rockstar games you know and love. It's a mystery game and you play a detective searching the streets of Los Angeles.  So, yes, it has the big, expansive world and sandbox-style gameplay that you're used to from this producer. A bad-ass leading man and what's rumored to be one of the most developed story lines that Rockstar Games has ever developed have put this game in the spotlight from other big name titles releasing in the early months of 2011.Another top selling game for Rockstar? Probably. This game releases May 17, so keep an eye out for it.
Everyone needs a little escape from the harsh world of minimum wage, classes and the tedium of homework. So just do what I do. Pick up the hottest games or even pick up an old favorite. Sit down on your butt with a bag of chips and Mountain Dew and relax. For all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Or girl, in my case.
Catch me next week for the hottest games coming out for the Nintendo Wii and DS.

Nintendo 3DS Release Dates, Prices for Europe and U.S. Revealed.

Nintendo on Wednesday officially revealed release dates as well as recommended prices of its highly-anticipated 3DS portable video game systems in the European Union and the United States. The handheld with autostereoscopic 3D screen will cost in the U.S. less than in Japan, but will become available only in late March. Europeans will pay most for the 3DS.

Nintendo 3DS will become available in Europe on March 25, 2011, and will be released in the U.S. on the 27th of March. The portable console will cost $249 in the U.S., which is lower than ¥25 000 ($304) in Japan and much lower than €249 ($335) in Europe or £219 - £229 ($349 - $365) in the UK. As previously reported, Nintendo will release the highly-anticipated gadget on 26th of February in Japan.

Since all consoles will be virtually locked to their region of purchase, games acquired in one region may not work with consoles from other regions. As a result, it will be impossible to buy a Nintendo 3DS in the U.S. and then use it with games released in Europe or Japan.

Earlier this month in an interview with a Japanese news-paper, Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, said that the company planned to sell 1.5 million of 3DS consoles in Japan in its first month (starting from February, 26) and ship 4 million of the new-generation portable game systems worldwide by the end of March. Given the launch dates in Europe and the U.S., it is clear that Nintendo anticipates incredible demand towards the world's first portable game console with stereo-3D screen.

"Nintendo 3DS is a category of one - the experience simply does not exist anywhere else. You have to see Nintendo 3DS to believe it. And it's like nothing you have ever seen before," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

Nintendo 3DS features a 3.53” autostereoscopic 3D top screen with 800x240 resolution (400 pixels for each eye) and a 3.02” bottom touch screen with 320x240 resolution. It has three 0.3MP cameras – one inner and two outer – to deliver the stereo-3D effect and take stereo-3D pictures. It includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n controller, a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analog input and so on. The device also has a special slider that can increase, decrease or disable stereoscopic 3D (S3D) effect. The 3DS comes in form-factor that is similar to the predecessors and is fully compatible with Nintendo DS titles. The console uses DMP Pica 200 graphics processor. As announced previously, it will have a slot for SD cards as well as support cartridges for previous-gen DS systems. When playing stereoscopic 3D games specifically developed for 3DS, the console will last 3.5 to 5 hours depending on conditions. When playing DS or DSi games, which are naturally 2D only, the system will have a battery life of 5 to 8 hours. Full charge of the batter takes around 3.5 hours.

During the launch window (between the March 25/27 launch date and the E3 Expo in early June) more than 30 games will be available to Nintendo 3DS owners.

Nintendo 3DS Overview

3D Screen

The Nintendo 3DS system opens up a whole new world of eye-popping gameplay possibilities. The stereoscopic 3D display of the upper screen gives objects within the game world a feeling of space and depth that extends far into the back of the screen. It becomes easier to see the position of characters and obstacles in the world, making many game experiences even more intuitive for all types of players.

3D Depth Slider

A built-in 3D Depth Slider allows you to immediately adjust the intensity of the 3D settings on the Nintendo 3DS system to your liking. The 3D effect can also be turned down completely—all Nintendo 3DS games and applications can be played in 2D, and look better than any Nintendo handheld before it.

More Hardware Features

Motion Sensor & Gyro Sensor
Portable play control reaches a new level with these amazing features, allowing for new & unique gameplay mechanics. A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system, so whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly.

 Two screens

Game graphics have never looked better on a Nintendo handheld system, thanks to the two screens of the Nintendo 3DS system.
A widescreen display on the top screen shows 800x240 pixel resolution, allocating 400 pixels for each eye to create the 3D effect.
The bottom LCD touch screen operates at a resolution of 320x240—with both screens capable of displaying a brilliant 16.77 million colors.

Analog Control

With the Circle Pad, located above the + Control Pad, Nintendo 3DS offers full analog control in 3D game worlds. Combined with the touch screen, traditional buttons, camera and microphone input, and advanced motion control of the Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor, the potential is extraordinary.

3DS Camera

The Nintendo 3DS system uses its two outer cameras to see the world in 3D, much like the human eye, allowing for the creation of 3D photos—and a similar 3D effect to that seen in Nintendo 3DS games.

adjustable Stylus

The adjustable Nintendo 3DS Stylus takes the idea of touch control to a new and even more user-friendly level. Once removed from the holder, the stylus length can be adjusted to your liking with a simple push or pull. Now anyone can achieve the optimum level of comfort while playing games that use the stylus.

Charging Cradle

Dock your Nintendo 3DS system whenever you are not using it in the included Charging Cradle to keep it powered. You can then leave the system on in Sleep Mode while charging, so that it can communicate via the SpotPass feature at any time of day or night.

2GB SD Memory Card Included

Every Nintendo 3DS system comes packed with a 2GB SD Memory Card. You can use this SD Memory Card to store your 3D photos, and sound recordings created on the Nintendo 3DS system, and music* from your PC. You can also use it to store games downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. The Nintendo 3DS system has SDHC card compatibility to increase your storage space even further.
* Nintendo 3DS is compatible with MP3 and AAC file formats.

backwards compatibility
Almost all existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games can be played on a Nintendo 3DS system in 2D. With backwards compatibility, your existing portable games look and play just as well*.
* Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games will be displayed in 2D graphics. Select Nintendo DS games that use accessories in the Game Boy™ Advance slot of the Nintendo DS system are not compatible with the Nintendo 3DS system.

StreetPass
Social and wired like no Nintendo system before it, Nintendo 3DS brings fellow players together in exciting new ways with StreetPass™ communication. Set your Nintendo 3DS to Sleep Mode and carry it with you wherever you go to exchange game data like Mii™ characters, high scores, and custom characters with other users you pass on the street. You control what data you exchange, and you can exchange data for multiple games at once, making virtual connections with real world people you encounter in your daily life.

SpotPass
Nintendo 3DS includes SpotPass™,a feature that lets Nintendo 3DS detect wireless hotspots or wireless LAN access points and obtain information, game data, free software, videos and so on for players even when the system is in sleep mode.*
*Some of these features may not be available at launch

Super Stardust – considered to be one of the best twin thumb shooters of this generation.
MotorStorm – a motor racing game with the most beautiful vehicle crashes you will ever see.
Braid – this time manipulation puzzle game will bend your mind and perception of reality.
Flower – is a serene game that transcends the medium and is considered art by many.
Joe Danger – a stunt bike game, is definitely Excitebike on steroids with an extensive track builder and online multiplayer modes galore. This is a welcomed addition to “Play, Create, Share” genre.

Conclusion:
There are just too many games to list and making this list was extremely difficult. There were titles we wanted to squeeze in like Warhawk and Siren: Blood Curse (honorable mentions), but in the end some trimming had to be done. If you are a PS3 owner, or planning on picking one up for the holidays, then these are the games you should definitely consider playing.
