Whether you’re a longtime Xbox 360 owner or have got hold of one recently, the following list should help you decide which games you absolutely need to own. They are, to our minds, the Top 40 best Xbox 360 games ever released.

Halo 3 – Where would Xbox be without Halo? And Halo 3 is the best one.
Gears of War 2 – The best third-person shooter available? I think so.
Red Dead Redemption – The surprise hit of 2010, and a true gem.
Mass Effect 2 – An almost perfect game, even better than the original.
CoD: Modern Warfare 2 – What more can be said about this shooter?
GTA IV – Still fantastic, and the best sandbox game on the Xbox 360.
Fable III – Another outstanding gem from Peter Molyneux.
Braid – The highest Xbox Live game on the list. A true stroke of genius.
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 – An old-skool shooter on XBL.
Left 4 Dead – A co-op experience that will suck up many hours.
Gears of War – Almost as good as the sequel, but not quite.

Conclusions
Not all of these games will appeal to everyone, but generally speaking they are the essential Top 40 Xbox 360 games to buy and play to death. If you only buy 40 games for your Xbox 360 then make them this 40. You won’t regret it. And if you do, then don’t blame us. Because personal opinion still reigns supreme when it comes to gaming.
