How do I set up the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system for the first time?

When you turn on the PS3 system for the first time, you will be required to complete an initial software setup process before you can use the system.
Note: You will also have to go through this setup process if you use the Restore Default Settings option.

An Internet connection is not required to setup the PlayStation 3, however, if you wish to play games online, update to the latest system software, access the PlayStation Network, use the Internet Browser, etc. you will need to connect the PS3 to the Internet.

To perform an initial system software setup

1. Turn on the TV.
   
2. For the older PS3 systems, you will need to turn on the PS3 main power switch. For the newer PS3, there is no main power switch so you can skip this step.
   The power indicator will turn solid red to indicate that the system has entered standby mode.
   
3. Touch/press the PS3 system power button.
   The power indicator turns green and the picture is displayed on the TV screen.

4. Connect the wireless controller to the PS3 system using a USB cable.
   
   
5. Press the PS button on the controller.
   This will effectively pair the SIXAXIS™ or DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller with the PS3 system. After the system has recognized the wireless controller, follow the instructions to advance to the next setup screen.
   
   
6. Select your language.
   Next, you will select the language you wish the PS3 system to use. Use the directional pad on the SIXAXIS wireless controller to scroll to the name of the desired language and then press the button.
   
   
7. Select time zone and set time.
   You will be asked to select the time zone appropriate for your current location. Use the directional pad on the SIXAXIS wireless controller to scroll to your time zone and then press the button. Next, you will set the current time.
   
   
8. Enter your User Name.
   On the following screen, you will enter a "User Name" into the system. This will be the name of your default user profile.
   
   
9. Confirm & Finish
   Once all of the required screens have been entered, the system will ask you to confirm the information and press the button to finish the setup.
   
10. XMB^TM Home Menu
    After the setup is completed, you will be taken through the initialization screen (splash screen with the wavy graphics) and have full access to the XMB Home menu.
