How to Sync a PS3 Keyboard

For gamers wishing to use a method of text input other than the on-screen keyboard, the PlayStation 3 features the ability to sync a wireless keyboard or an official PS3 Wireless Keyboard. Using the PS3's Bluetooth capability, the console allows for compatible Bluetooth devices to be connected to the system for text entry during games and PlayStation Network functions. In addition to standard Bluetooth-capable keyboards, available at retailers, Sony offers a Wireless Keypad that can be attached to a Dualshock controller.

Instructions

 Syncing a PS3 Bluetooth Keyboard

  1. Power on the Bluetooth keyboard and PlayStation 3 console. If the keyboard requires a pass key number to connect, make sure the number is handy to be entered when necessary.

  2. Highlight "Accessory Settings" from the "Settings" section of the PS3 menu. Press the "X" button.

  3. Highlight "Manage Bluetooth Devices," and "Register New Device," then press "X" to confirm your choices. Highlight "Yes" and press the "X" button to confirm that you wish to register a new device to the console.

  4. Highlight "Start Scanning" and press "X." The console will display the Bluetooth devices detected during the scan. Select your keyboard and press the "X" button. Enter the keyboard's pass key number, if required. The keyboard is now linked to your PS3 and can be used for text entry.

 Syncing a PS3 Wireless Keypad

  1. Power on your PS3 and Wireless Keypad. The keypad must be synched with the PS3 console before attaching it to a Dualshock, as the device uses its own bluetooth signal.

  2. Connect the keypad to the PS3 using the Type A/Mini USB cable, inserting the smaller end in the keypad and the regular end into the PS3 console. The keypad will be linked automatically to the PlayStation 3 through the device's bluetooth capability, much like synching a Dualshock controller. Disconnect the USB cord from the keypad and the console.

  3. Attach the keypad to your Dualshock controller. Open the clamp on the keypad and connect the keypad to the Dualshock, attaching the clamp to the bottom of the controller between the two analog sticks. Press the keypad firmly to snap it into place with the keys located above the controller, between the "L1" and "R1" buttons. The keypad can now be easily accessed during gameplay.
