How to Set Up WiFi for the Wii

The Wii gaming entertainment system allows users to play certain game titles online against other players around the globe. This online gaming feature provides an extra layer of longevity and replay value to games, but your Wii must first be configured with your Wi-Fi network to gain access to the Internet. No special tools are required to set up your Wii for Wi-Fi though, and you can surf through the settings and establish your connection in short order.

Instructions

    1. Click "Wii Options" on the Wii main menu, and then "Wii Settings."

    2. Select the right arrow on the bottom of the screen. This will take you to the second page of Wii Settings options. Select "Internet" here.

    3. Click "Connection 1" or any of the unused connections--there are three listed. It does not matter which one you choose to initially set up.

    4. Use the "Auto-find" feature to find the wireless network(s) you have in range in your home or office. This will take a few moments, and on average the process will last 30 seconds. If this Auto-find feature fails, click "Manual Setup."

    5. Enter your SSID. The SSID is just wireless jargon for the name of the wireless network you wish to use on your Wii system. For example, the SSID may be "User's Network." The name you enter must match the name you specified upon initially creating your wireless network.

    6. Click the right arrow beside where you entered your SSID. From here you may select the kind of security encryption that was used upon setting up the wireless network you are using. If you did not password protect your network, ignore this. If you did, select the applicable encryption for your network--either "WEP" or "WPA." WPA is technically a superior encryption method, but be sure to select the one you chose when first setting up your Wi-Fi network.

    7. Enter your WEP or WPA key when prompted. This key is the personal password you selected when setting up your wireless network. It is case-sensitive, so use caution when entering it into the Wii system's settings.

    8. Select "OK." Your Wii should successfully connect to your Wi-Fi network. If it does not, revisit your manual settings and ensure that your Wi-Fi network name and WEP/WPA password key are correctly entered, and then try again. Allow at least 30 to 90 seconds for your Wii to join your Wi-Fi network before canceling the process, altering the settings and trying again.
